Memorial Hermann
Memorial City Hospital Volunteer Service has a place for you!
At Memorial
Hermann Memorial City Hospital volunteers donate their time, days,
nights, weekends, and holidays in a year-round program. Volunteers ages
range from 15 90. These caring and committed people come from
every walk of life, corporate, professional, retirement and youth. They
bring new ideas, inspiration, enthusiasm and commitment.
Volunteer Service was founded in 1971 with 22 members. Today there are
244 day and evening volunteers and 140 junior volunteers. Day volunteers
work once a week from 9 a.m. 12:30 p.m. (am shift) or 12:30 p.m.
4:00 p.m. (pm shift) Monday through Friday. Evening volunteers
routinely work 4 8 PM once a week, seven days a week. After a
comprehensive orientation and six training sessions, volunteers are
assigned to a particular area on a particular day and shift. This is
a unique approach to hospital volunteering.
The
Junior Volunteer Program is also year-round with junior volunteers working
one weekend day a month during the school year. On holidays and during
summer vacation, these volunteers work with the day volunteers. Free
coffee breaks, lunch and/or dinner, parking and uniform are just a few
of the advantages offered to the Volunteers by
Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital. An elected and appointed
board governs the volunteer service. Many volunteers serve on hospital
and corporate committees and boards. Staff personnel include a director,
manager, and day, evening and junior supervisors. Volunteer service
is a member of the Texas Association of Hospital Auxiliaries and the
Texas Hospital Association and participates annually in the state convention.
Volunteer service organizes and participates in varied events during
the year. Blood Drives are held three times a year. Celebration of the
volunteer birthday is a happy occasion that includes volunteers, hospital
personnel and friends. Major holidays are observed with numerous activities.
A spring luncheon for day and evening volunteers is a time to highlight
service and talents in a social setting. A state convention, usually
held in June, is fun and educational. Health, sport and special events
sponsored by the hospital and Healthcare system are worked and well
attended by the volunteers.
Volunteer Service has a scholarship fund to provide monetary assistance
to those enrolled in the healthcare field. Currently, 159 students have
received $149,425 in scholarships. In 1998 the Junior Scholarship Program
awarded 10 scholarships to graduating high school seniors in the amount
of $10,250.
