Summer Teen Program

teen volunteerThe Summer Teen Volunteer Program begins the week of June 2 and ends the week of August 22. You must be available to volunteer through the entire summer, and keep a regular schedule. All teens must reach a minimum age of 14 by June 2, 2008, and be attending high school in Fall 2008. View volunteer opportunities.

Shifts are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. You must volunteer at least two shifts a week, preferably on separate days and are expected to volunteer those shifts for the entire program. You will be provided with a meal ticket if you serve both shifts during a single day.

We understand that you may have camp or vacation plans, and are willing to work with those plans as long as you will not be absent from the program for more than two weeks.

Applications and Information

Applications will be given out at this time. Applications are not available before this date. You will be required to write a one-page essay explaining your motivation to volunteer and obtain a letter of recommendation from a teacher or community leader.

We invite you and your parents to join us for one of these informal sessions where we are happy to answer any questions you may have. The application deadline is Friday, May 2nd. Faxed applications will not be accepted (please mail or bring applications to our office in person).

Students will be notified of acceptance to the program by Friday, May 16. There will be two Summer Teen Program Orientations. They will be held on Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sunday, June 1, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. It is mandatory to attend this Orientation.

Placements

Your placements will depend on your availability, behavior and level of maturity. Returning volunteers will be placed first. First year volunteers are not allowed to volunteer in the Children’s Hospital.

Volunteers are placed throughout the hospital in units that have requested help from the program. There are many opportunities to assist with patient care, family support and general office support.

If you are looking for an opportunity to "shadow" a physician, nurse, or other healthcare professional:

Volunteers have a wide range of contact with various medical professionals; however, the program is not structured to provide a shadowing/observational experience.
