Volunteer

Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center &
Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital

Give the greatest gift of all!

At Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, committed volunteers are the keys to our success. We invite you to make a difference in someone’s life – bring a smile to an elderly patient or comfort a frightened child.

As a Memorial Hermann volunteer, you will be a part of the first hospital built in the Texas Medical Center. Our goal is to ensure that the volunteer experience at Memorial Hermann is as rewarding to the volunteer as it is beneficial to the patients, families, visitors and caregivers. Find out how you can become a volunteer.

No Benchwarmers Here

We are in the midst of recruiting players (volunteers) for our special teams. We are seeking players to fill our roster of forward progress volunteers, who guide our patients and visitors to treatment areas and other hospital locations.

Consider attending our tryouts (program introduction) - we think you will want to be here for spring training (orientation).

Following spring training, you will have a chance to experience a pre-season scrimmage, with our team supporting you.

Requirements:

  • A friendly, outgoing personality
  • Good communication skills
  • Stamina

As a team member, you will be assigned a zone, inside which you will:

  • Approach
  • Greet
  • Assist hospital guests and patients

There will be four quarters (shifts) from which to choose, allowing for maximum flexibility. Players will be thoroughly trained and receive a playbook (training guidebook) to assist with their game plan (responsibilities). Having trouble getting around? No problem. We will red shirt (assign) you to the information desk.

Immediate gratification follows – you earn points for the smiles you induce.

Volunteer Profile

Hermann’s volunteers come from all corners of the community and represent a variety of professions, age groups, physical abilities and ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

All have made the commitment to donate their time to patients, families and visitors and become part of Memorial Hermann.

Adult volunteers (minimum of 18 years old) are asked to commit to volunteering three to four hours a week for a minimum of six months.

Teen volunteers, students 14-17 years old, volunteer in the summer and throughout the year.

Potential volunteers come to an introductory session where they learn about our Supplemental Paths Program. Furthermore, the department of volunteer services provides general orientation and training.

Volunteers are educated about the importance of ethics and confidentiality, professional behavior and appearance, proper patient interaction, including age-specific competencies, universal precautions, infection control, fire safety and security.

Unit-specific training is provided for each placement. It is possible to cross-train a volunteer in several different areas of the hospital. Every effort is made to match the applicant’s skills, abilities, schedule and interests with the hospital’s needs.

Volunteer Benefits

While volunteering, you will have access to free parking and are eligible for a discount in the hospital cafeteria on the days you volunteer. A free meal ticket will be provided for volunteers who serve four hours or more a day. Free flu shots are provided yearly.

Volunteer services, upon request, will provide a written letter of recommendation for all volunteers who serve a minimum of 100 hours.

Recognition Program

Every hour of volunteer service is deeply appreciated, and service awards are presented each year to honor active volunteers for their contributions to Memorial Hermann. Both teen and adult volunteers are recognized at formal and informal events throughout the year.

Each April, during National Volunteer Week, the Texas Medical Center holds a salute for all TMC volunteers.
