Accomplishments
- Founded in 1976 Dr. James “Red” Duke, who is still medical director of the program
- Flown more than 110,000 missions in 30 years of service
- Only Air Medical Service accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS) in the greater Houston area; accredited by CAMTS for six years.
- More than 265 years of medical transport experience, including aviation and medical staff
- Formed the first National EMS Pilots Association (NEMSPA) in 1985
- Busiest EMS education center in the Houston area
- Educational programs instrumental in training NASA astronauts in case of possible clinical emergencies
- Clinical team members participate in on-going training, including skills lab, five specialty ICU rotations, annual safety classes and training specific to airborne patient care and transport
- Association of Air Medical Services recognized Tom Flanagan as program Director of the Year in 1999
- One of the first U.S. air medical programs to participate in a joint research project with the Department of Defense
- First Texas air medical ambulance to land at the Super Dome following Hurricane Katrina to evacuate patients
- First Texas air medical project to establish mobile command in Baton Rouge, La., following Hurricane Katrina
- Texas Department of State Health Services air medical program of the year, 2001 and 2004
- One of the first programs to begin using the Eurocopter BK117
- First air medical ambulance in Texas and in Houston; second in the United States
- One of the first air medical programs to have all medical personnel certified in their specialty
- One of the 10 air medical programs selected for the North American Aero Safety Network Pilot Program
- One of the founding members of the American Society of Hospital Based Emergency Air Medical Services (ASHBEAMS), which led to the formation of the Association of Air Medical Services (AAMS)
- Instrumental of the formation of the National Flight Nurse Association
