  Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center

From routine cancer screenings to complex treatment, the Cancer Center at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center brings together world-class skill, leading-edge technology and the most modern care available. We offer a continuum of diagnostic, treatment and support services designed with the needs of cancer patients in mind. Our affiliation with The University of Texas Medical School gives you access to clinical trials and leading-edge treatments and procedures.

The physicians at the Cancer Center have been trained at such highly regarded institutions as MD Anderson and Memorial Sloan-Kettering. Our oncology certified nurses (OCNs) are board-certified in oncology nursing, which ensures they have the specialized knowledge, proper qualifications and experience necessary to provide exceptional care. Each patient has access to the oncology nurse navigator, who makes the transition from diagnosis to treatment smoother and simpler to help patients through recovery and healing.

In addition to highly personalized physical care, the care team at the Cancer Center also provides emotional support during the entire course of each patient’s treatment. Nutritionists and social workers support the physicians and nurses, assisting patients through recovery and healing.

The Cancer Center at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center is accredited as a Teaching Hospital Cancer Program by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.

Robotic-Assisted Surgery
The most common type of robotic surgery, the robotic prostatectomy provides access to the internal anatomy through five small incisions. Using the da Vinci® Surgical System, the surgeons at the Cancer Center perform precise, nerve-sparing surgery that results in more complete eradication of cancer, as well as retention of bladder control and potency. Patient benefits include shorter hospital stay, less pain, less risk of infection, less scarring and quicker return to normal activities.

In December 2002, Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center established the Institute for Cardiovascular Research and Robotic Technology. One of the largest robotic training centers in the nation, the center has trained more than 1,000 surgical teams from across the country and stands at the forefront of this groundbreaking technology.

Gamma Knife
Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center put the region’s first Leksell Gamma Knife into operation in 1993. Since then, neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists and medical physicists have used it to treat patients from a variety of brain and neck tumors. For candidates who quality, noninvasive Gamma Knife radiosurgery virtually eliminates the risk of hemorrhage or infection and minimizes damage to other vital structures. Long-term studies have show favorable success rates, and mortality form the procedure itself is zero.

Lymphedema/Hyperbaric Medicine Services
Lymphedema is a chronic condition characterized by swelling of the patient's extremities due to abnormal accumulation of lymph fluids. The lymphedema management program offers noninvasive therapies to help patients reduce limb swelling, attain maximum limb function and maintain limb health. Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center offers the only comprehensive lymphedema management program in Houston.

Hyperbaric Medicine is a treatment modality that uses oxygen under pressure to achieve different physiological responses. It is currently used in the treatment of some complications from radiation therapy such as prophylaxis or treatment of osteoradionecrosis of the jaw, hemorrhagic cystitis or other late effects of radiation to soft tissues including non healing wounds or prior to surgical reconstruction of irradiated tissue.
