Colasurdo Named Physician-In-Chief of Memorial Hermann Children's Hospital
HOUSTON, Dec. 22, 2005 – Noted pediatric lung specialist Giuseppe N. Colasurdo, M.D., has been named physician-in-chief of Memorial Hermann Children’s Hospital, concurrent with his appointment as Department of Pediatrics chair at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston.
“We are delighted to have Dr. Colasurdo’s expertise guiding our medical strategies and leading our continuous effort to maintain the highest clinical quality and provide exceptional patient care,” said Steve Allen, M.D., MBA, CEO of Memorial Hermann Children’s Hospital.
An established researcher in the field of pediatric asthma, Colasurdo has long held leadership roles at both UT and Memorial Hermann Children’s Hospital. He has directed the hospital’s pulmonary and asthma center since 1995 and the university’s pediatric pulmonary and critical-care medicine division since 2002. He served as interim chair of the university’s pediatrics department since May.
“In this short time, he has moved the department forward in new ways and has strengthened our relationship with Memorial Hermann Children's Hospital,” said Stanley G. Schultz, M.D., dean of UT Medical School at Houston. “This is particularly important as we work together with the hospital to increase the stature and scope of our clinical offerings.”
“I am honored by this new opportunity,” said Dr. Colasurdo. “The collaboration between our medical school and Memorial Hermann Children’s Hospital in the Texas Medical Center lays a strong foundation for our shared vision: outstanding clinical programs, successful educational activities and innovative research.”
Dr. Colasurdo is the author of several scientific papers, leads research projects related to the basic mechanisms of lung disorders in children, and is the recipient of funding from the National Institutes of Health. He earned his medical degree from the Gabriele D’Annunzio School of Medicine in Chieti, Italy. He completed his pediatric residency at UT Medical Branch in Galveston and his fellowship in Denver at the University of Colorado Health Science Center and the National Jewish Research and Medical Center.
