Comfort and Accuracy for Mammograms at Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital
Katy,
Texas, December 8, 2004 – Three
new products bring added comfort and clinical accuracy to annual
mammograms at Memorial Hermann Katy
Hospital. From
a major technological advancement to smaller, personal touches, these
products help reduce the stress of what has become a lifesaving ritual
for women over 40. A new computer-aided
detection system, the R2 ImageChecker®,
scans mammogram films and alerts radiologists to take a closer look
at areas that may be abnormal. “The advantage is having a second set of ‘eyes’ on the film.
It’s a way to double check,” explained Dr. Terence O’Connor,
chief of Imaging Services at Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital. “The R2 scanner
is good at picking up subtle calcifications that are sometimes difficult to see.” Another new
product makes the mammography process more comfortable. MammoPads® add
a fresh layer of soft foam to imaging plates for each patient. This cushioning
gently grips the skin to better hold the breast in place, and can help
produce better images by allowing radiology technologists to apply
compression with
more comfort to the patient. The MammoPads® also serves as a warm
barrier between the cold surface of the equipment and the patient’s
skin.
A
third new product is designed to help patients feel fresh through
the rest of their day. Doctors advise women not to apply deodorant
before mammograms because it can cause false test results, so Memorial
Hermann Katy Hospital now provides individual, complimentary deodorant
wipes, a thoughtful touch that typifies the hospital’s patient-centric
approach.
