New 16-Slice CT Scanner Enables Quicker, More Accurate Diagnosis for Outpatients

Houston, Texas, Novmeber 13, 2004 -- A leading-edge computed tomography (CT) scanner just installed at Memorial Hermann Hospital’s Outpatient Imaging Center gives patients and doctors a convenient new option for quick, top-quality testing outside the hospital setting.

Physicians often use CT scans to noninvasively diagnose medical problems that aren’t easily detectable from normal physical examinations. The new Light Speed16 CT scanner allows radiologists to simultaneously capture 16 wafer-thin images of the desired area within seconds. Incorporating computer technology, the images are used to produce three-dimensional visualizations of internal organs and structures.

“This state-of-the-art scanner will make exams more comfortable for patients because they’re completed faster,” explained Stephen Kaminsky, M.D. “Faster scanning means we’re reducing the patient’s exposure time to radiation, and the quicker image retrieval process will ensure faster reporting of studies to their physicians.” Dr. Kaminsky is chief of imaging at Memorial Hermann’s Outpatient Imaging Center and a clinical assistant professor in the radiology department of the University of Texas Medical School-Houston.

Since the scanner produces digital pictures instead of film exposures, doctors may view results almost instantly. Through the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), scanned images can be transmitted quickly to treating physicians or to hospitals within the Memorial Hermann Healthcare System.

Light Speed16 CT is manufactured by GE Medical Systems.

Memorial Hermann Hospital’s Outpatient Imaging Center at 6410 Fannin St. provides a wide array of diagnostic services including CT scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), mammograms, X-rays, breast biopsies, ultrasound and bone density tests as well as imaging of the kidneys and gastrointestinal tract. Doctors read and interpret most test results onsite.

The center is under new management and conveniently located to serve doctors and patients in the Texas Medical Center. Same-day appointments often are available. Valet parking is free to patients, and METRORail stops nearby. To make appointments, please call 713-704-1203.
