Center Expands Neuroscience Services at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands
Hospital
The Woodlands,
Texas, May 26, 2005 – A new stroke center at Memorial
Hermann The Woodlands Hospital marks the facility’s latest milestone
in developing a comprehensive neurosciences program.
The new stroke
center reflects the hospital’s commitment to providing acute
stroke patients with leading-edge treatment, including new clot-dissolving drugs.
It also enables Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital’s Emergency Center
to receive stroke patients transferred via ground or air ambulance from hospitals
lacking the capability or capacity to provide urgent treatment. This means Montgomery
County residents may not have to travel so far for treatment in the critical
first three hours following a stroke.
The stroke
center is one of a series of initiatives through which we are creating
a
center of excellence in neurosciences,” said Dr. William B.
Parks, the hospital’s Chief Medical Officer
In addition to
offering neurosurgery to treat conditions such as brain tumors and
aneurysms, the hospital is expanding its neurotrauma
capabilities. It
can now treat patients age 17 and older with isolated head injuries, Dr.
Parks
said. “Our neurosciences
planning committee, made up of physicians and staff members, is doing
an excellent job, charting ways to enhance the continuum of
quality care offered to stroke patients and others with neurological
problems,” said
Steve Sanders, CEO of Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital.
Neurosurgeon
Peter Shedden, M.D., chairs that committee. Other neuroscience
physicians practicing at the hospital include surgeons Norman Torres,
M.D., and Imran Fayaz,
M.D., and neurologists Kevin Gaffney, M.D., John Rossi, M.D., Randall
Wright, M.D., and Benny Wang, M.D.
