Hospital Care Givers Awarded for Excellence

Three honored for commitment and dedication to healthcare

The Woodlands, Texas, May 25, 2004 — Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital awarded the prestigious Memorial Hermann Healthcare Excellence Awards to three top-notch leaders in patient care. These honorees demonstrated excellence in at least one of the following areas: patient advocacy, clinical expertise, collaborative relationships, commitment to quality, leadership, education and community involvement.

Wendy Mead, RN, received the Memorial Hermann Healthcare Excellence Award in the category for Direct Patient Care. Bringing clinical expertise in heart services from her previous post at Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center, Mead, has been director of cardiopulmonary at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital since 2002 and has been pivotal in the planning and development of the hospital’s cardiac catheterization and interventional radiology lab. Because of Mead’s dedication, a strong lab staff is even stronger and relationships with cardiologists have been reinforced as well. Last fall the cath lab began performing interventional cardiac catheterization procedures without surgical back-up on site, providing heart patients with immediate treatment.

Tourgee McDowell, an administrative assistant in the emergency center, was honored in the Professional/Support category. As a software trainer, McDowell’s thorough knowledge of clinical software programs enables staff members and physicians to navigate through the advancing technology. McDowell willingly puts in long hours when necessary to complete staff training and also offers her expertise at health fairs and community events. Additionally, she serves as a “buddy” to new employees, welcoming them and familiarizing them with the hospital.

Sibylle Waugh, RN, received the Memorial Hermann Healthcare Excellence Award in the category of Nursing. Waugh, who is assigned to the emergency center, earned additional responsibility by serving as the shift charge nurse. She also represents the emergency center on the hospital’s Staff Nurse Council and devotes time to orienting new employees to the department. On top of that, Waugh is also a mentor to other nurses. She is an active volunteer with United Way and the hospital’s Partners In Caring committee.

Memorial Hermann Healthcare Excellence Award honorees are nominated by their peers, then selected by a hospital panel to be recognized during National Hospital Week.
