“By early 2007, Memorial Hermann will have brought online about 2.5 million square feet of healthcare space at a cost of approximately $600 million,” said Marshall Heins, vice president of construction, real estate and support services. “Memorial Hermann has responded to the needs of the patients in the communities we serve, and we are bringing high-quality healthcare closer to their neighborhoods as Houston continues to grow.”
Medical plazas housing outpatient services and physician offices will open throughout the summer and fall in Katy, Sugar Land, Cy-Fair, Pearland and on Memorial Hermann’s Memorial City and Southwest campuses.
“These new facilities bring together the latest in healthcare technology and personalized service in soothing environments,” said Memorial Hermann president and CEO Dan Wolterman.
The system’s largest projects will follow – new hospitals in Sugar Land and Katy, Heart & Vascular Institutes on the system’s Southwest and Texas Medical Center campuses, and the 30-story Memorial Hermann Medical Plaza-Texas Medical Center.
“The new replacement hospitals in Katy and Sugar Land will emphasize exceptional patient experiences while providing advanced treatments and innovative technology, expanding the reach of specialty resources such as those offered by the system’s three Heart & Vascular Institutes and Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital,” Wolterman explained.
Meanwhile, the Heart & Vascular Institutes expand and enhance the system’s ability to deliver innovative care to heart patients in the Greater Houston area and beyond. These institutes provide leading-edge treatment and diagnosis by bringing together innovative interventional cardiology, electrophysiology and advanced surgical services, such as robotic-assisted coronary artery bypass grafts.
In addition to providing leased office space for physicians, the medical plazas will provide outpatient imaging and surgical services as well as a variety of specialty facilities such as sports medicine, breast care and bladder continence centers.
“We plan to introduce full-service outpatient imaging centers throughout Houston,” said James Polfreman, assistant vice president of system imaging services. “Patients will benefit from the availability of advanced diagnostic services near where they live and work, and physicians receive reports and images within 10 hours after the exam. We also contract with most health insurance companies in the area.”
Outpatient surgery centers in the new medical plazas will be operated as joint ventures between Memorial Hermann, physicians and United Surgical Partners International, which manages the facilities.
“By creating these joint ventures, we are able to work together with USPI and physician partners representing all major surgical specialties to provide facilities that offer the highest levels of quality, service and convenience to our patients,” explained Dave Whalen, vice president of business development.
