Cancer Program Awarded Highest Approval

Comprehensive, community-based care top notch

Houston, Texas, March 11, 2004 – The cancer program at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital receives the highest possible approval from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. This places the program among a select group comprised of 28 percent of the nation’s approved cancer programs surveyed during the most recent three-year period.

While the Commission sets the standard for cancer programs across the country and has issued “Certificates of Approval” to more than one-fifth of the hospitals, only the top programs receive the highest rating.

“Receiving top approval is very gratifying, and we know that the presence of this high quality comprehensive cancer program here at Memorial Hermann Southwest is going to have a positive impact on the community’s health.” said Dr. Louis Neff, the hospital’s Cancer Committee chairman.

The Certificate of Approval ensures that cancer patients who are treated at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital have access to:

  • Quality care close to home.
  • Comprehensive care offering a range of state-of-the-art services and equipment.
  • A multispecialty, team approach to coordinate the best treatment options available to cancer patients.
  • Information about cancer clinical trials, education and support.
  • Lifelong patient follow-up through a cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results.
  • Ongoing monitoring and improvement of care

Approval by the Commission is earned by cancer programs that voluntarily undergo a rigorous evaluation and performance review. To maintain approval, the program at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital will undergo an on-site review every three years.
