Houston, Texas, February 23, 2006 – Memorial Hermann Hospital System and TIRR Systems have agreed to consolidate TIRR (The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research) and TIRR Rehabilitation Centers into Memorial Hermann effective May 1, 2006.

Memorial Hermann and TIRR have a great deal in common. Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center is home to the Mischer Neuroscience Institute, a source of world-class research and treatment for conditions such as epilepsy, stroke, and brain tumors. As a Level I trauma center, the hospital is also known for expertise in treating patients with severe head trauma. Named to the U.S. News list of “America’s Best Hospitals” for 16 consecutive years, TIRR has achieved worldwide renown for excellence in research and treatment for patients with catastrophic injuries and illnesses, including traumatic brain injury and stroke, spinal cord injury, amputations, multiple trauma, complex orthopedic injuries, multiple sclerosis, or other neurological diseases/disorders.

With 13 outpatient facilities, 10 of which are rehabilitation centers, strategically located throughout the Texas Gulf Coast, TIRR’s leading edge rehabilitation services are accessible throughout the region.  The goals of TIRR Rehabilitation Centers match well to Memorial Hermann’s leadership in orthopedics and sports medicine. Memorial Hermann hospitals across the system excel in orthopedics. The system is the official healthcare provider for the Houston Rockets, Comets and Aeros. Recently, Memorial Hermann announced a new Sports Medicine and Human Performance Institute. Through TIRR Rehabilitation Centers, patients receive rehabilitation following orthopedic surgery or injury. A Sports Medicine Outreach Program combines prominent physicians with TIRR Rehabilitation Centers’ skilled athletic trainers, therapists and other sports specialists.

As one of the largest not-for-profit hospital systems in the country, Memorial Hermann is known for clinical expertise, operational excellence, fiscal responsibility and business acumen. “Bringing TIRR into Memorial Hermann is a natural extension of the care we provide for  orthopedic patients as well as those with complex neurological disorders and traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries,” said Dan Wolterman, president & CEO of Memorial Hermann. “Memorial Hermann and TIRR employees share a passion for breakthrough care. Physicians from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and Baylor College of Medicine provide outstanding clinical care and groundbreaking research.”

“Memorial Hermann’s commitment to the community is very much aligned with that of TIRR and TIRR Rehabilitation Centers,” said Allan “Bud” Shivers, chairman of the board of TIRR Systems. “This relationship will benefit our patients, physician partners and employees, and allows us to leverage our 46 years of rehabilitation expertise to serve even more patients throughout the Texas Gulf Coast.”

TIRR’s established and valued affiliation with both The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and Baylor College of Medicine will continue to advance clinical care and research through long-term affiliation agreements. The continued participation of these integral partners combined with the world-class services and technology of Memorial Hermann and TIRR will ensure that patients from around the world benefit from TIRR programs and research for many years to come.
