Romans Named Senior VP and CEO

Houston, Texas, January 6, 2003 -- Memorial Hermann President and CEO Daniel J. Wolterman announced today the appointment of Juanita F. Romans as senior vice president, Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, and chief executive officer of Memorial Hermann Hospital, effective immediately.

Romans has been vice president and chief operating officer of Memorial Hermann Hospital since May 2001. She is the first registered nurse to join the ranks of Memorial Hermann CEOs and the first woman appointed to the organization’s senior executive council. Romans has nearly 20 years of clinical and administrative experience.

Prior to joining Memorial Hermann, Romans had been an executive vice president with Evanston Northwestern Healthcare, a three-hospital system affiliated with Northwestern University Medical School in Evanston, Illinois. She holds a master of science in nursing from Wayne State University and is an associate in the American College of Healthcare Executives. She serves on the board of Houston’s South Main Center Association.

“In her tenure as vice president and COO of Memorial Hermann Hospital, Juanita has proven to be an extremely competent and popular leader,” said Wolterman. “Juanita’s outstanding clinical and administrative skills are critical assets. She has cultivated excellent relationships with our board members, with University of Texas Health Science Center leaders, and with the medical staff, employees and the community.”

Max Buja, M.D., dean of The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, added: “Juanita Romans has gained my respect and the respect of many other faculty and private physicians at Memorial Hermann Hospital based on her broad knowledge of the healthcare field, her leadership abilities and her interpersonal skills. Her extensive and varied experience, including work at other academic medical centers, will hold her in good stead as she assumes the CEO role. I look forward to working with her in advancing the strong partnership that already exists between our two organizations.”

The 11-hospital not-for-profit Memorial Hermann Healthcare System provides quality comprehensive programs and services for a person's whole life. Located in the Texas Medical Center, Memorial Hermann Hospital is an 818-bed tertiary teaching hospital affiliated with The University of Texas Medical School at Houston.
