Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital

Neurosciences Services

Peter Shedden, MD, neurosurgeon at the Woodlands Hospital, recently performed brain surgery on a patient.

Neurosciences Services in The Woodlands offers an expanded number of programs and procedures to treat neurological disorders and conditions including complex brain surgeries and neurotraumas. The hospital can treat serious problems like aneurysms , tumors , and strokes (bleeding in the brain) thanks to skilled neurosurgeons and sophisticated equipment.

The neuro surgical service is equipped to treat patients age 16 and older. In addition, nurses with advanced training in neurological care, and an adept medical staff, can perform emergency surgery on patients with head injuries. A 12-bed surgical intensive care unit is used for those who have undergone neurological surgeries.

A full range of high-quality diagnostic imaging options are available to help diagnose neurological disorders. Innovative equipment used to diagnosis and treat these conditions include a new mobile PET/CT scanner. It combines the best of two technologies: PET detects changes in the body caused by the growth of abnormal cells, while CT reveals the size, shape and location of tumors. Another innovative device, the Stealth Navigation System, lets doctors pinpoint the exact location of a tumor to within a millimeter and see a virtual 3-D image of the brain. This data helps surgeons operate more quickly and efficiently.

Stroke Center

Memorial Hermann The Woodlands has earned the Gold Seal of Approval™ from The Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers. The hospital earned this distinction in May 2007 after the Joint Commission conducted an on-site review.

Our stroke center is among less than 20 accredited primary stroke centers in Texas, and reflects the hospital's commitment to providing acute stroke patients with leading treatment, including new clot-dissolving drugs.

It also enables Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital's Emergency Center to receive stroke patients transferred via ground or air ambulance from hospitals lacking the capability or capacity to provide urgent treatment. This means Montgomery County residents may not have to travel so far for treatment in the critical first three hours following a stroke.

Spinal Surgery

Neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons offer a range of treatments for disorders of the spinal column and spinal cord including degenerative disorders, trauma, infections, congenital disorders and tumors.

Surgical techniques include endoscopic, minimally invasive approaches to help reduce post-operative pain, speed recovery, shorten hospital stays and reduce disability. New technologies and minimally invasive techniques include degenerative disk and spine fracture repair and vertebroplasty, when bone cement is directly injected to mechanically strengthen a fractured vertebra.

Neurosurgeon Peter Shedden, M.D., is at the forefront of artificial disk implants. With lumbar disk implants approved by the FDA, he is presently engaged in prospective research studies on the possible benefit of cervical disk implants as opposed to fusion.
