Nurse with mother and baby

But it's not just premature babies who require special care. Even seemingly healthy infants can develop infections, experience breathing problems or exhibit other symptoms that require around-the-clock monitoring. Southeast's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) can comfortably take care of babies born as early as 28 weeks of gestation.

Our medical staff neonatalogists and neonatal nurse practitioners lead a specialized team of nurses, therapists, pharmacists, dietitians and social workers who work together to care for your baby. Our NICU staff provides specialized treatment in a Family Centered Care environment, with an open visitation policy to encourage and support your involvement in the care of your baby.

Special care nursery

Southeast staffs its NICU with specially-trained nurses skilled in Level III NICU on each shift. Babies may spend from a couple days to several weeks in the special care nursery.

NICU staff will provide oxygen therapy, antibiotics, intravenous line (IV) and nasogastric (NG) tube feedings. Southeast will train current staff and hire Level III NICU trained staff to take care of exchange transfusions, umbilical vessel catheters, chest tubes, infusions of fluids, blood or lipids; oxygen support, such as ventilators, nasal cannulas, continuous positive airway pressure or oxygen hoods; feeding problems requiring special equipment; and monitoring infant heart and respiratory rates or blood pressure.

NICU facilityMost infants 28 weeks and older can be cared for at our facility. In the event that your baby must be transferred, Memorial Hermann Life Flight offers a dedicated Neonatal Transport Team that is readily available. Our affiliation with Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital provides for seamless access to the higher level specialty services offered at the university-affiliated hospital.
