Women's Services

Maternity Services

Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center is the hospital of choice for maternity services in Houston. Our advantages range from exceptional staff and physicians to facilities and services that are among the best in the nation.

Certified registered nurses work with some of the world’s best doctors to ensure that every woman we serve has a memorable, positive childbirth experience. Our nurses have broad experience in high-risk, as well uncomplicated deliveries, and bring a unique level of expertise to expectant mothers and their families.

We also provide a full range of high-quality facilities, technologies and services for our patients. These include:

  • 35 beautifully appointed, modern labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum suites
  • A special antepartum unit that provides testing and monitoring – including ultrasound – during pregnancy
  • Fully-equipped nurseries
  • Neonatal intensive care unit
  • Nutrition and educational guidance
  • Lactation support and consultation
  • In-room transition, allowing infants to remain with the mother immediately after birth rather than being “transitioned” away from her, as is often the case at other facilities
  • Spa services
  • Intensive and emergency care at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital, which is located in the same building and provides high-quality treatment for infants around the clock

A Warm and Supportive Setting

In addition to superior clinical capabilities, the Women’s Center offers something else to expectant mothers: a feeling of warmth and compassion. It is at the heart of all that we do and can be seen everywhere. Our advantages include:

  • Private rooms, which maximize intimacy, minimize disruptions and help make your stay with us as comfortable as possible
  • Soothing surroundings, such as muted beige tones, accented with blues and greens that combine to create a tranquil environment
  • A homelike atmosphere that lets you rock your newborn to sleep in a glider chair and provides a comfortable, upholstered window seat for visitors
  • Immediate mother-infant bonding, allowing mothers and babies to spend time together right after delivery rather than requiring a four-hour separation, or transition period
  • Large bathrooms, which assure maximum ease and convenience for new and expectant mothers
  • Special amenities, including The Newborn Channel – which delivers free programming on baby care and postpartum topics right to your room – and personal birthday cakes the day after delivery
  • Valet parking until 9 p.m., after which patients can be dropped off at the emergency center and will be brought by wheelchair to the Women’s Center

The Joys of Parenthood

The birth of your baby is a truly special event, and the Women’s Center has a full range of classes and services that will enhance the birthing experience, ease your anxieties, and help prepare you for the joys of parenthood.

Childbirth education
Provided for expectant mothers and fathers, this course offers instruction, education and discussion of matters related to pregnancy and the birth experience, including:

Breastfeeding
Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center is committed to the 10-step program for successful breastfeeding, because we believe that is the best form of nutrition for your new baby. So we’ve developed a special 90-minute course that helps expectant parents learn proper breastfeeding techniques and better understand why they are so vital to the health of your new baby.

Infant care for new parents
A new baby means new experiences and challenges for your family. Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center makes sure you’re ready. This course provides the know-how and skills you’ll need to care for your infant and offers insight on how the new arrival can affect family dynamics.

Big brothers and sisters classes
It’s not just moms and dads, but siblings who are also changed by the arrival of a baby. That’s why Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center holds special classes just for new brothers and sisters. They’ll learn ways to hold, diaper, burp and feed babies. And each child who attends gets a certificate showing he or she is ready to help mom and dad provide effective, loving care.

Maternity tours
With a free tour of our Women’s Center, you’ll see why Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center is Houston’s preferred birth hospital. You’ll get an “up close and personal” look at our world-class services and amenities, and we’ll answer any questions. We can also pre-register you to make sure that everything is taken care of before arrival day comes.

Maternal Fetal Medicine

The Maternal Fetal Medicine unit at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center provides special care for women whose pregnancies are considered high risk because of conditions and complications such diabetes, hypertension and pre-term labor.

More than 3,000 medical procedures are conducted yearly in the unit. Services include fetal ultrasound, amniocentesis, fetal biophysical profile and more specialized procedures such as percutaneous umbilical blood sampling and intrauterine transfusion. An experienced staff and convenient location near obstetrics services contribute to peace of mind when you want it most.

Anesthesiologists, doctors and board-certified specialists in maternal-fetal medicine are on call 24 hours a day. Nurses have immediate access to physicians for interpretation of test results or emergency deliveries.

Services such as pre-pregnancy consulting and genetic consulting are available from maternal-fetal specialists at The University of Texas Medical School of Houston. Gynecological oncology services are available through our affiliation with MD Anderson.

Additionally, Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital is just two floors away, and offers a 92-bed Level II and Level III neonatal intensive care unit if critical services are required. For babies with heart conditions, fetal echocardiography is available in the Children’s Heart Institute.
