Should an inpatient procedure or transplant be indicated, physicians utilize advanced imaging techniques and state-of-the-art surgical suites at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.
Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center is the No. 1 donor hospital in the United States. Transplant candidates receive high priority; the goal is to place patients on the waiting list within two weeks.
Support for Families
Patients and their families are reassured and educated about disease management and/or the transplant process from Center physicians and a specially trained team of nurses, dietitians, social workers and child life specialists. Housing specialists and counselors to discuss financial resources are also available. Partners with Primary Care Physicians
Referring physicians are respected partners throughout diagnosis and treatment. A constant flow of communication between the Texas Liver Center and primary care physicians is fundamental to a successful outcome.
When a transplant is indicated, the patient’s referring physician is updated throughout the pre- and post-transplant stages. Information regarding hepatitis management, post-transplant care, and immunosuppressive drug therapy and drug interactions is available for referring physicians when requested.
Financial Resources
Costs related to transplant include evaluation and testing, transplant surgery and hospitalization, follow-up care and medication. A patient's insurance coverage plays a vital role, whether it is through a private company or a governmental program. It is important that each patient fully understand his or her coverage.
You should ask your insurance company some of the most important questions as you begin to consider transplant as a treatment option, including:
- Is transplantation a covered benefit?
- Is there a maximum allowance on transplantation and transplant-related services?
- Is there a maximum allowance on procurement of the organ?
- Is there a lifetime maximum or "cap" on the policy?
- Is there adequate coverage for post-transplant medication?
- What is the annual "out-of-pocket" maximum amount on the policy?
In the event that the patient does not have access to adequate insurance coverage for transplant, there may be other avenues to obtaining support to offset the expenses related to transplantation. These include charitable organizations, advocacy groups or fund-raising campaigns.
