Cardiac Catheterization Lab
With five new state-of-the-art catheterization labs, Memorial Hermann continues to provide the very best cardiovascular care in Houston. Each lab is equipped with the latest technology and has digital image storage, which enables physicians to view images with family members after the procedure.
Additionally, an 11-bed pre-procedure and recovery unit is located adjacent to the labs. This allows patients to be admitted directly to the lab, have their procedure and be discharged from the same area. If patients require an overnight stay, dedicated units at the hospital specialize in cardiac care.
Services include:
- Cardiac catheterization Procedure where doctors thread a small tube through an artery in the patient’s arm or leg and into the heart to determine how serious the problem is and decide on the most effective treatment
- Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty Widely used procedure to treat blocked or narrowed arteries
- Coronary stent placement Placement of a wire-mesh tube in a narrowed artery to improve blood flow and reduce chest pain
- Radiation therapy for in-stent restenosis Small amounts of radiation used to prevent the overgrowth of tissue – and subsequent re-narrowing of arteries – after the placement of a stent
- Rotational and laser atherectomy Advanced procedures that gently remove fatty deposits that can block coronary arteries
- Cutting balloon angioplasty Sophisticated form of angioplasty which reduces the potential that a coronary artery will re-close after being cleared
- Angiojet thrombectomy High-pressure water source passed through a catheter to remove clots in the arteries
- Intravascular ultrasound New technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create a picture of the inside of a blood vessel and help identify blockages or other abnormalities
- Pressure wire stenosis assessment Sensor used to locate and analyze the severity of blockages caused by cholesterol in coronary arteries
- Valvuloplasty Procedure used to open up stiff aortic, mitral or pulmonary valves in the heart
- PFO, ASD and PDA closure Procedure where holes in the heart are repaired
- Atrial septostomy Widens the naturally occurring hole in the wall separating the two upper chambers of an infant’s heart, improving circulation until a defect can be surgically repaired
- Alcohol septal ablation for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy Technique that improves blood flow which has been restricted by an overgrowth of the septum, the wall that separates the left and right chambers of the heart
- Transseptal catheterization procedures Catheter runs through the septum into the left side of the heart to get a better assessment of blood pressure in the left ventricle

Cardiac Rehabilitation
Memorial Hermann’s cardiac rehabilitation service is a multi-faceted, medically supervised program focusing on the physiological and psychological aspects of recovering from heart disease. Its objectives:
- To decrease the risk of another cardiac event and the progression or development of heart disease
- To modify patient lifestyles in ways that enhance long-term heart health
- To increase functional capacity through exercise by developing cardiovascular endurance, strength and flexibility
- To increase understanding about the nature and causes of heart diseases
- To instill confidence in patients so they can resume normal activities in their daily lives
The rehabilitation process generally includes these specific programs:
Phase I
Begins when the patient enters the hospital and a cardiovascular condition has been identified. Patients and their families are taught about cardiac disease, how to modify risk factors and how to return to a maximum level of functioning upon leaving the hospital. Phase I rehab also includes telemetry monitored exercise, nutrition counseling, stress management consultations and smoking awareness as needed.
Phase II
A 12-week, 36-session program that starts immediately after discharge from the hospital. Phase II rehab helps patients and their families adjust to heart disease and modify their lifestyle. It includes telemetry monitored exercise, nutrition and stress management consultations, smoking awareness classes and CPR training.
Phase III
Maintenance program that lets patients continue lifestyle modification through non-telemetry monitored exercise and shorter versions of nutritional, stress management and smoking awareness counseling. It may also be used by individuals with a high risk of cardiovascular disease to prevent future problems.
Wellness
Directed and monitored by physicians. This program offers exercise, nutrition and cardiac disease risk-management programs for adults and children.
Therapeutic Rehabilitative Intensive Program (TRIP)
Innovative program developed to assist patients who cannot easily access sophisticated cardiac rehabilitation services or who live in communities where those services are not available.
A doctor’s prescription is needed to begin the rehabilitation program. Most insurance companies cover Phases I and II, depending upon the policy, and Medicare covers both phases as well as entrance and exit stress tests. Phase III and wellness-related services are charged at the end of the month and are not usually covered.
Eligible individuals include, but are not limited to, those who have suffered a heart attack, undergone coronary artery bypass grafting, have evidence of coronary artery disease and/or have stable angina.
Treadmill stress tests are performed prior to admission and upon completion of the rehabilitation to help develop a comprehensive exercise program.

Center for Hyperbaric Medicine
Staffed by a specialized team of physicians, nurses and technicians, the center uses hyperbaric oxygen therapy to treat carbon monoxide poisoning, wounds and a variety of medical and surgical conditions.
Long used on divers suffering from the bends, the technique dramatically increases the amount of oxygen carried to the tissues by the blood.
Patients breathe 100-percent pure oxygen while in a chamber filled with compressed air. The air pressure in the chamber can be increased up to six times higher than normal, increasing blood oxygen significantly.
Blood vessels then deliver this super-oxygenated blood to tissues throughout the body to help heal, fight infection, decrease swelling and aid in the growth of new vessels.
Specific conditions treated or improved by hyperbaric oxygen therapy include:
- Certain non-healing diabetic and non-diabetic wounds
- Radiation damage from cancer treatments
- Bone infections
- Decompression sickness (the bends)
- Air bubbles in the blood
- Carbon monoxide poisoning
- Necrotizing infections (skin infections accompanied by cell death)
- Skin flap/graft salvage
- Crush injuries
- Gas gangrene

Memorial Hermann Hematology/Oncology Clinic
The Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center Hematology/Oncology Clinic serves patients with blood disorders and breast cancers, gastrointestinal cancers, lung cancers, lymphomas and other tumors.
An integrated multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses and related professionals uses a variety of complex diagnostic tools and diverse therapies to deliver high-quality, effective care.
The clinic setting also enables patients to meet with the entire team of professionals contributing to their care, assuring total communication and a thorough understanding of treatment regimens.
Two therapies provided by the clinic are unique to Houston:
Whole body hyperthermia
This therapy increases the number of malignant cells killed by elevating the body temperature to a fever-range temperature or higher, maintaining that temperature for one hour; and simultaneously administering chemotherapy. The fever-range temperature levels may also increase the patient’s immune response.
Gamma Knife Radiosurgery
A therapy that is literally brain surgery without a knife. Gamma rays are manipulated to take the shape of a tumor or blood vessel abnormality and then focused directly on the targeted area, leaving surrounding tissues unharmed. This alternative treatment is superior to conventional brain surgery for many patients with small to mid-sized brain tumors, blood vessel abnormalities and pain from trigeminal neuralgia, a condition that affects one of the largest nerves in the head.
By administering therapies like this, in addition to providing an empathetic social and psychological support system, the team of specialists can maximize the patient’s response to treatment and further increase chances for survival.
