Pediatric Dermatology
The Pediatric Dermatology Department at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital offers medical care for skin disorders in children of all ages, from neonates to teenagers. Our physicians work closely with neurology, renal transplant services, general pediatrics, the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, the nurseries and our wound care center, as well as other areas of the hospital. They offer ongoing clinical trials focused on managing a broad range of children’s skin disorders.
About the Skin
The skin is the largest and most visible organ of the body. It reflects the health of the body and acts as a barrier against injury and bacteria. At one time or another, nearly everyone has some type of skin disease – infants, children, teenagers, adults and the elderly. One in six of all visits to family doctors involve a skin problem.
Atopic Dermatitis
Also known as eczema, atopic dermatitis is a chronic, itching inflammation that tends to run in families susceptible to asthma and hay fever. Atopic dermatitis is one of our main research areas, along with fungal infections infections of the skin.
Fungal Infections
A variety of fungal infections, also called mycoses, can affect the outer layers of the human skin. Although they are sometimes difficult to cure, they are not considered dangerous.
Psoriasis
Normally a chronic, recurrent inflammation of the skin, psoriasis occasionally appears as an acute disorder. While its cause is unknown, it appears to be an inherited and possibly autoimmune disorder.
