1907  

Memorial opens first chartered training school of nursing in Houston.

Memorial purchases its first X-ray machine.
  
1931 Memorial installs Drinker Respirator, a "baby breather" machine to resuscitate babies, a first for the region.
  
1941 Memorial organizes first Houston general hospital psychiatric section.
  
1943 Memorial is the first general hospital in state to receive shipment of new "wonder drug" penicillin.
  
1946 Hermann performs first cardiac catheterization in Texas.
  
1947 Hermann breaks ground for Hermann Professional Building, the first high-rise office building outside of downtown.
  
1949 Hermann opens new main building, reportedly first major hospital in nation to be air-conditioned.
1953

Memorial employs its first full-time volunteer director.
  

1957

Memorial establishes first general practice residency in Texas.
First recorded cesarean birth under hypnosis performed at Memorial.
  

1959 Memorial offers first physicians' course in psychiatry in Houston.
  
1965 Memorial establishes first hospital-based speech clinic in the South.
  
1969

Memorial opens first branch coronary care unit as part of plan to install units in each branch.

Memorial becomes first community hospital in nation to offer routine hearing tests for newborns.
  

1971 Hermann enrolls first University of Texas medical students at Houston campus.
  
1973 Hermann completes first helicopter landing facility for Houston-area hospitals.
  
1976 Hermann flies first mission of Hermann Life Flight.
  
1980 Memorial is among first in nation to start affiliation program with other health care facilities in state.
  
1982 Memorial is the first in Houston, one of five nationally, to offer free hepatitis B vaccine to employees.
  
1986 Memorial is the first in state to offer programs designed specifically for Texans age 55 and older.
  
1991

Hermann opens the world's first comprehensive center devoted to application of chronobiological methods for medical diagnosis and treatment.
  

1992

Houston's first combined kidney/liver transplant performed at Hermann.

A 10-month-old baby receives living donor liver transplant at Hermann - first such surgery ever in Houston.

Hand transplant performed at Hermann - believed to be world's first

Emergency liver transplant from living donor performed at Hermann - believed to be one of first such operations in medical history

Silent Care Center opens at Hermann as one of nation's first general medicine clinics dedicated to deaf patients.
  

1993 Melinda H. Perrin becomes first woman to serve as chair of Hermann board of trustees.
  
1994 Hermann becomes first Level I Trauma Center in Houston.

First lung transplant performed at Hermann.

First Chest Pain Center in Houston opens at Hermann.

Hermann implements first testing of new immunosuppresant drug, Rapamycin.
  
1996-97 Memorial is voted a "Top 100" hospital in the nation for the first time.
  
1999

Memorial Hermann opens Houston's first medically based, university-affiliated wellness center, the Memorial Hermann/HBU Wellness Center.
