bed capacity to 485, adds modern obstetrics unit, private labor rooms and special

of Pastoral Care initiates Memorial Program in Clinical Pastoral
Education. |

Memorial's
Outpatient Department opens, containing both diagnostic and
specialty clinics. Hospital staff serves without charge, and
patients pay according
to their ability.
Hospital
adds School of Medical Technology, Physical Therapy Department
and psychiatric program. Air-conditioning is installed throughout
hospital.
Memorial
is approved for only general practice residency in Houston
and a rotating internship.

Work
begins on 15-story medical and professional building. The downtown
medical complex now encompasses two city blocks.
Memorial
establishes the first general practice residency in Texas.
The first
recorded cesarean birth under hypnosis takes place at the hospital. |

Wilson Turner becomes hospital administrator.

Professional Building is completed. |

Memorial
becomes first hospital in Houston to have course in psychiatry
for physicians in practice.
Memorial
Baptist Hospital Southwest opens 100-bed facility with sections
for pediatrics, obstetrics and surgery. One year after opening,
construction begins on addition that will increase bed capacity
to 165. |
