Industrial Rehabilitation Programs

Pain Management Program

The Pain Management Program at Memorial Hermann|TIRR Rehabilitation Centers emphasizes education and behavioral modification. Pain management services include four program options to meet the individual needs of each patient. Each program consists of a core set of components.

Most programs offer electives to maximize functional restorations. The flexibility of choosing treatment modalities allows the multidisciplinary team to develop a patient-focused treatment plan. Our most comprehensive program is Full Restoration.

Full Restoration Program: This program is designed for patients who continue to experience chronic pain and functional limitations despite surgeries, interventional procedures, the use of narcotic medication and participation in lower levels of care (e.g., physical therapy, biofeedback, psychological counseling). Patients typically engage in therapeutic activities for eight hours per day to regain their stamina to perform in a regular 40-hour per week job. The program focuses on educating the patient on pain management strategies, as well as using physical rehabilitation as a tool to modify behavior. Vocational counseling will also be offered on a weekly basis.

Orthopedics

The Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation Program at Memorial Hermann|TIRR Rehabilitation Center involves evaluating and managing people with a broad range of soft tissue and joint conditions including dysfunctions involving the shoulder, hip, knee, ankle/foot and spine. Our comprehensive orthopaedic rehabilitation program is open to people with acute and chronic injuries, as well as muscle imbalance and overuse injuries. The program is aimed at correcting the dysfunctions, assisting with healing and restoring functional capabilities.

Therapists treat many post-surgical patients, as well as those who have suffered traumatic injuries. Aquatic therapy is available at several Memorial Hermann|TIRR Rehabilitation Centers to provide a gravity-reduced environment that supports injured joints, for example during shoulder rehabilitation or knee rehabilitation. This permits more comfortable movement early in the rehabilitation process and facilitates an earlier return to functional activities.

Hand and Upper Extremity Rehabilitation

Memorial Hermann|TIRR Rehabilitation Centers’ Hand Therapy Program specializes in rehabilitation of the hand, as well as the wrist, elbow and shoulder related to acute traumatic injuries, congenital problems and repetitive injuries (such as tennis elbow) that occur at home or work. Acute traumatic injuries include fractures, amputations and lacerations resulting in nerve or tendon injuries.

Our certified hand therapists work closely with Houston-area hand surgeons to develop advanced treatment methods to restore an individual’s functional use of the upper extremity. Program therapists are highly skilled in the area of fabricating splints. Splints help protect the individual during the natural healing process.

In addition to providing treatment, our hand therapists provide specialized training to all clinicians across the Memorial Hermann|TIRR network of facilities. The Hand Therapy Program provides ergonomic training, as well as education and therapy for chronic illnesses such as arthritis.

Memorial Hermann|TIRR provides two programs for evaluating and preventing work-related injuries and offering helpful direction for preventing future injuries:

  • The Successful Returns program, which focuses on the injured worker’s need to return to gainful employment in a healthy and physically fit workforce and the employer’s need to accomplish this task in a highly professional and effective atmosphere.

  • Work-Right, an ergonomics program that emphasizes injury prevention services and takes a pro-active team approach to reduce workplace musculoskeletal disorders and their associated costs.

Aquatic Therapy

Memorial Hermann|TIRR Rehabilitation Centers offers Aquatic Therapy, using land- and water-based therapies that focus on the individual’s need to return to optimal physical performance and daily activity level. Utilizing the physical effects and therapeutic benefits of water, the highly experienced staff at Memorial Hermann|TIRR designs rehabilitation programs that are specific to the individual’s injury and desired functional level.

For example, the WATERWORKS! program, offers effective therapeutic recreation and training that participants can continue long after their prescribed rehabilitation has ended. The program begins with an initial evaluation and development of a care plan by a licensed clinician at Memorial Hermann|TIRR, which includes progression into an independent aquatic program or a land-based exercise program as appropriate, and community aquatic fitness programs for individuals to improve and maintain their desired fitness levels.

Aquatic therapy is available at three Memorial Hermann|TIRR Rehabilitation Centers locations: The Greenway Plaza and Town & Country facilities in Houston, as well as the facility in Beaumont. These Memorial Hermann|TIRR facilities offer the WATERWORKS! program, and all are equipped with a variety of pools that cater to customers’ needs.
